Three Stages. One Throughline.
• Stage 01: The Consultation
Before any session is scheduled or any tutor is selected, you meet with our founder Lariel Mateo directly. The Consultation is a real conversation about your student: their academic history, their learning preferences, and what you are hoping this experience gives them.
But it goes deeper than academics. A student’s relationship with learning is shaped by far more than their grades. Their environment, their interests, their confidence, and their sense of self as a learner matter just as much. The Consultation is designed to surface what a grade report never could.
• Stage 02: The Pairing Process
This is where the Mateo Method earns its name and your student becomes a Mateo Scholar. After the Consultation, Lariel hand-selects three tutors from the team whose subject knowledge, communication style, personality, and teaching approach align with your student specifically.
You, your student, and Lariel then meet with each tutor individually during a Zoom call. Each tutor has ten minutes to simulate what an actual session with them would look like. You witness the tutor and your student interacting in real time, and the dynamic that naturally forms between them. Your student plays a direct part in the process as they select their tutor.
• Stage 03: Scholar Growth
Once the match is made, the work begins. Each session is structured around your scholar’s specific goals, whether that is closing a gap, strengthening an existing skill, preparing for a standardized test, or pursuing enrichment in a certain area. The personalized plan builds independent thinking, not dependence on the tutor.
The relationship between a scholar and their tutor extends beyond subject mastery. Your scholar learns how to approach a problem they have never seen before, how to sit with confusion without giving up, and how to trust their own reasoning without needing someone to confirm it. These are not skills that belong to one subject. They are skills that propagate into every course, every challenge, and every chapter of life that follows.
What Takes Root.
The word tutor originated in the late 14th century from the Latin tutor, meaning guardian, watcher, or protector. The role was never purely academic. It was always personal.
With this as the basis of our philosophy, we watch over the scholar’s confidence as carefully as we watch over their progress. We look at the full person, not just the subject they are struggling with or excelling in. We protect the belief that every scholar’s potential is still unfolding.
